Neo Soul Flashback:

Liv Warfield

August 1, 2014

I was talking to a few Neo Soul kids recently who called Jill Scott the truth.  Before you go as far as to thinking that I'm saying she's not, let's get some things straight: I love Jilly from Philly.  She is the woman right there with Badu.  But this lady here...back in 2006 when the Neo Soul movement was starting to become anti-Neo Soul, this lady came out with the perfect we're-over-but-I-still-love-you songs.  I Decided is one of those songs where you're mad at him, but deep inside, you know you're gonna make up later on and make love while this very song is playing.  It's poetry within itself, along with the goddess herself in her before-Prince pre-blond days.  Of course, I would tip toe real soft if you walk in the house and you're woman is playing this while cooking.  Um...it might be time to take her out for dinner. And if you're in the car and this song is playing on repeat...son, apologize.  Quick.

Before Hollywood Soils your Mind: Watch
Soul Survival: The James Brown Story

August 1, 2014

I'm sure many of you have already taken the weekend and spent your money on James's Brown's recent biography Get On Up, a highly anticipated motion picture with top stars and great scenes. But before you get caught up in Hollywood's version of the Godfather of Soul, check out Soul Survivor : The James Brown Story, which tells a compelling story about his life.  Now, I'm not saying that the story that Hollywood wouldn't be accurate.  So don't take me as being a hater, because just like you and many who danced to his music, authorized or unauthorized, I am a fiend for James Brown music. The Payback?  Papa Got A Brand New Bag? Papa Don't Take No Mess?  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE?  This man inspired Bootsy Collins, Prince, Michael Jackson...we can go on all day.  But you have a video to watch.  Enjoy yourself!

Grown Folk's Television:

Gimme A Break

August 1, 2014

I grew up when TV was fun, and since 1998, television hasn't been as much of a good time.  In the 70's and 80's, the writers on the top three networks actually had imagination.  They wrote scripts.  They had actors.  Brilliant actors.  Nell Carter, who a Tony and Emmy award winning thespian, was one of them.  In my most depressed state. when there was no one to talk to or turn to, I turned to Nell and Gimme a Break, and needless to say, after an ongoing marathon of this sassy Alabama queen, I was a better woman for it.  I wiped the tears from my face, laughed and cried happy tears from laughing.  This episode, James Return, happens to be one of my favorites because of the song at the end.  I mean, this chick could SANG!  Check out this and many episodes on YouTube under the subscription gimme break.  (I know, that's not the name of the show, but much love for having the episodes available!)
